We did not set out to build the largest Murphy cabinet bed showroom in Florida. It happened one bed at a time, and the reason was always the same: somebody stood in front of the one we had and asked to see a different one.
That is the whole story. A customer would come in for a guest-room solution, open the Arason, love the mechanism, and then ask whether anything came in a whiter white. So we brought one in. Then somebody wanted the drawer configuration Night & Day does. Then a Sanford-built Alexander & Sheridan with the rattan detail, because it looked like Florida instead of looking like Maryland. Do that for a few years and one day you count what is on the floor and it is thirteen cabinet beds from all five American manufacturers, which as far as we can tell is more than anywhere else in the state.
Why thirteen instead of two
Because nobody buys a bed they have never seen open.
A cabinet bed has to do two completely different jobs. For roughly 360 days a year it is a console in your living room or a cabinet in your den, and it has to look like furniture you chose on purpose. For the other five days it is the bed your daughter and her husband sleep in, and it has to be a real bed. A photograph cannot tell you whether a piece does both. One display unit cannot tell you whether the maker you are looking at builds a better mechanism than the maker you are not.
So we floored the category. All five makers, side by side, all openable. You can fold thirteen of them down and back up in an afternoon and feel the difference in your hands — the weight of the fold, the way the drawer runs, whether the finish looks sprayed or looks made. That comparison does not exist anywhere else in Florida, and honestly it barely exists anywhere online, because the pictures all look the same.
Cabinet bed, not wall bed
Worth being precise, because the words get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing.
A Murphy bed folds up vertically and mounts to your wall. It gets installed, it needs clearance to fold down, and it stays with the house. Most of the Florida businesses you will find selling “Murphy beds” are custom cabinetry shops that build those to order — good work, different product.
A Murphy cabinet bed is freestanding furniture. Nothing bolted to a wall, nothing installed, no construction, no HOA conversation. It rolls out to a real queen mattress in under a minute and rolls back to a cabinet just as fast. If you are in a condo, a rental, a beachside place with concrete walls, or you simply do not want holes in your drywall, this is the version that works. It is also the entire category we chose to specialise in.
The mattress question
It comes up in the first five minutes every time, so: yes, it is a real mattress. Every model on our floor is queen size with an upgraded premium six-inch cooling gel memory foam mattress — not a thin fold-out pad with a bar across your back. The fastest way to settle it is to lie down on one, which we encourage and which surprises people every time.
Come open one
After 33 years in furniture retail I have learned that the fastest way to lose a sale is to ask somebody to imagine something. The fastest way to make one is to hand them the handle and get out of the way.
